How to identify a False Prophet?

I wonder if there is a way for 'us' if we can spot out a false prophet from a true one? Well, in this age of science where everything is based upon facts and evidence, if we tried I am sure we could. Well, I would like to start a running list of 'qualities' a prophet should have or do in order to qualify as a true prophet. Please feel free to add more if you can think of:

1) They have to perform miracles.
2) Can bring back the dead. I would like to list this separately because this is quite significant, how many prophets really had the power to bring back the dead?
3) They have to give prophecies.
4) Their prophecies have to come true.
5) Their moral conduct is of the highest standing.
6) Have to had spoken directly to God. In other words, getting their message or revelation from God directly instead of getting it through a secondary source.
7) The prophet in question should not contradict the true prophets before him/her.

leave all things brother,i dont have enough time to read all the scraps posted on different sites.take one by one.

how old was ahezia when he became king and at what age did his father died.
It is mention in 2nd KINGS,chapter no.8,verse no.26(BIBLE):It says that"Ahezia,he was 22 year old,when began to reign."

2nd CHRONICLES,chapter no.22,verse no.2,says that...."Ahezia was 42 year old,when he began to reign."
Was he 22 yrs old ,or 42 yrs old?---Mthematical contradiction in BIBLE.

Further more,in 2nd CHRONICLES,chapter no.21,verse no. 20, it says that...."Joaram,the father of Ahezia, reigned at the age of 32--and he reigned for 8yrs.,and he died at the age of 40.--Immediately Ahezia bacame the next ruler at the age of 42.Father died at the age of 40-immediately son takes over, who is at the age of 42..How can a son ,be TWO YEARS OLDER than a father???

Hi Ajmal, here are your questions with my answers:

1) please tell me which is the correct version of bible.
as different versions of bible writes different.

- All of them. There are different "translations" of the Bible. But all of them have the same underlined message, which hasn't changed since the time of it's inception.

2) if bible is the word of god, then why does it need revision from time to time.

- Bible is the "inspired" word of God. It does not need revision. Question for you: did you know there are different versions of Quran as well? Why do you think there are denominations like Sunni, Shia, Ismaili, etc.?

3) in which language was true bible revealed??

- Bible (The New Testament) wasn't revealed like Quran, it was "written" by followers of Christ, who walked, talked with him and saw him do nuerous miracles.

4) is it present in its original form today??

- Yes. If you pick up a King James version and a New International Version their will be textual difference, but they will both have the same meaning.

5) if bible was revealed on jesus, why is the red letter bible so less??

- Bible wasn't "revealed" on Jesus. Jesus was "revealed" to mankind as the son of God. Bible was written by Jesus's followers. Christians believe that Jesus is "the word of God". Whatever he says and have said is what God said.

Let's see if I were to put is simply, I would say that how do you know that Quran is the word of God? After all God (Allah in your case) didn't speak these words, it was supposedly Angel Gabriel who said these to Muhammad which you called Quran. So in essence, it wasn't a direct "revelation" either. Angel spoke -> Muhammad listened -> Muhammad recited to his followers -> His followers wrote it down on various objects many years after Muhammad died. So how do you know for sure that the Quran you read today is the same Quran and is the actual word of God?

God Bless

here are my queries related to your questions:-

u wrote:All of them. There are different "translations" of the Bible. But all of them have the same underlined message, which hasn't changed since the time of it's inception.

my response:different translations of what??
where is the original version???

u wrote:-- Bible is the "inspired" word of God. It does not need revision. Question for you: did you know there are different versions of Quran as well? Why do you think there are denominations like Sunni, Shia, Ismaili, etc.?

my response:-u said bible is the inspired word of god..don't play with words.bible is not the word of god.it was written by paul and many authors.

dont lie!!!
bible needs revision.revise satndard version was revised by 32 scholars of highest eminence backed by 50 cooperating denominations.
they removed many things like the word begotten.they say in the preface of the revised version that the King James version has GRAVE DEFECTS. Verses which have in the past been the king-pin of Christian preaching such as the Trinity (1John 5:7), The Ascension (Mark 16:9-20 & Luke 24:51), The Prophecy of Jesus found in
(Isaiah 7:14) and the incident of the women caught in the act of adultery (John 8:1-11), have now been discovered to be fabricated and unauthentic, therefore one finds that in the Revised Standard Version '52 they have been thrown out as "interpolations" and "pious frauds" by these modern Christian scholars.

moreover please reply me how mabny books of bible are there???

u asked:-did you know there are different versions of Quran as well? Why do you think there are denominations like Sunni, Shia, Ismaili, etc.?

my res[p[onse:-( it is either you don't know the truth or u are intebntiaonally trying to befool or wanna test the depth of my knowledge.
i am 18 yeras old but can pose a serious challenge for u)
u take any quraan(the arabic) because the translations are not quraan
and produce a single word difference between them whether it be shia quraan suni quraan or any otther.!!
i will embrace christianity today.
moreover we will discuss the shia sunni difference later5 on..

u wrote:Bible (The New Testament) wasn't revealed like Quran, it was "written" by followers of Christ, who walked, talked with him and saw him do nuerous miracles.

my response:-thanks for acepting that the quraan was revealed.
and if bible is not the word of god (nt)then why will i believe the word of human...
moreover how many times did paul met jesus ??

Sorry Ajmal, it took me a while to compile and write all this down. A brief history:

There are 5,735 (Welte, 2003) manuscripts of the whole or part of the Greek text of the New Testament (Injil) pre-dating Muhammad still in existence. Worldwide, there are 24,800 copies of these original manuscripts. These include the Codex Vaticanus (325-350 AD) located in the Vatican library and the Codex Siniaticus (350 AD) located in the British Museum. There are also 80,000 quotations in the works of early Christian writers which are so extensive that the New Testament could virtually be reconstructed from them without the actual New Testament documents. Then there is the obvious fact that the Christian Gospels were so widely distributed both before and after Muhammad, that any attempt to change (add/subtract) something in the Christian Gospels would have resulted in immediate discovery and condemnation. Additionally, the New Testament was handed down from apostolic times and its genuineness was guarded by Christian churches, and it was zealously watched by enemies of Christianity. A very wide protest would have resulted from both sides were it tampered with. Likewise, the Septuagint edition of the Old Testament was always in the hands of both Christians and Jews, both rivals in religion. Any attempts to change this by either side would have been vigorously attacked.

There are four more "safeguards" for the integrity of the Bible. (1) Jesus Himself read from Isaiah scroll in a Synagogue in Nazareth and declared it as Scripture (inspired from God), Luke 4:16-21; (2) The Dead Sea scrolls, found in 1947, verified the Jewish Torah back to 100 AD to 200 BC, when they were copied. Prior to this discovery, the oldest Torah dated to the 9th century AD. The Dead Sea scroll of Isaiah verified almost exactly the Isaiah scroll copied in the 9th century; (3) Early Church Fathers like Ignatius, Clement of Rome, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian (155-230 AD), Justin Martyr (100-165 AD), Irenaeus - who wrote from between 90-160 AD all cited in their writings Christian Gospel accounts (Guthrie, 1990, page 24); (4) We know that the writings of Moses were preserved as far back as 621 BC. 2 Kings 22 speaks of this at the time of the Israeli King Josiah. Ezra 7:14, Nehemiah 8:1-18, and Jeremiah 36 also speaks of the Jews maintaining Scripture. Some other collateral sources that confirm events in the Gospel of Jesus are: Tacitus (56-117 AD), Suetonius (69-130 AD), Josephus (37-100 AD), Thallus (50-170 AD), Pliny the Younger (61-113 AD), Trajan (53-117 AD), Hadrian (76-138 AD), Lucian (125-180 AD), Mara Bar Serapion (probably 1st century), Phlegon (100-199 AD)

Some versions of the Bible from 1881 differ in a few words here and there. However, the essential theological points remain the same and are complete.

The Christian Bible predates Muhammad and Islam by more than 575 years. The Jewish Torah predates Muhammad and Islam by 1,000 - 3,000 years. Muhammad said for Muslims to read the Bible for "Guidance and Light." For Islam to say they are corrupted, then is to call Muhammad a liar for recommending it.

The same Bible Muhammad would have seen (if he ever did) is in both (1) The Vatican (Codex Vaticanus) and (2) British Museum (Codex Sinaticus). It is all there, including Jesus dying on the cross as atonement for our sins. And, His resurrection, and ascension into heaven - in front of many witnesses. The New Testament is preserved in almost perfect condition in these two Greek texts which both predate Muhammad and Islam by over 200 years.

Everything in the Christian/Jewish Bible is being authenticated by archeology. Consider the Babylonian cylinder inscription of Nabonidus (thought to be the last king of Babylon) which commemorates the reconstruction of a ziggurat at Ur by Nabonidus and records a prayer to Belshazzar (Daniel 5) his son 'the firstborn son, the offspring of my heart'. Not only does this prove that Belshazzar was indeed a member of the Babylonian royal family, which had long been disputed, but it also explains why Daniel is told he could be the third ruler (with Nabonidus and Belshazzar more or less acting as co-regents). Also, consider the 'chariot wheels' divers found in the Red Sea, proving the Hebrew Exodus from Egypt was real; and that the Egyptian army chasing the Jews was drowned by God (Yahweh), just as was recorded in the Jewish Bible.

The Jewish and Christian Bibles were written by "inspired men of God" who immediately committed God's Word to writing.

Islam doesn't even have either an original or inspired Qur'an. The Muslim Qur'an was made up supposedly from "memory" from those who supposedly committed the words of Muhammad to memory, and from a few scraps found under a bed. This was originally begun about 15-20 years after Muhammad died at his wife Ayish's home in Medina, and he was lowered into a hole in the ground, where he remains. The compilation was not finished until at least 150 years after Muhammad's death. This "hearsay" argument seriously brings the credibility of the Qur'an into question. But, that's only the beginning. All the errors, including simple mathematical and historical errors you will see in the Qur'an renders it impossible to be a divine revelation.

Al Bukhari, a Muslim scholar of the 9th-10th century, and the most authoritative of the Muslim tradition compilers, writes that whenever Muhammad fell into one of his unpredictable trances his revelations were written on whatever was handy at the time. The leg or thigh bones of dead animals were used, as well as palm leaves, parchments, papers, skins, mats, stones, and bark. And when there was nothing at hand the attempt was made by his disciples to memorize it as closely as possible.

Zaid b. Thabit said: “The Prophet died and the Qur’an had not been assembled into a single place.” (p. 118, Ahmad b. `Ali b. Muhammad al `Asqalani, ibn Hajar, "Fath al Bari", 13 vols, Cairo, 1939/1348, volume 9, page 9)

Zuhri reports, 'We have heard that many Qur'an passages were revealed but that those who had memorized them fell in the Yemama fighting. Those passages had not been written down, and following the deaths of those who knew them, were no longer known; nor had Abu Bakr, nor `Umar nor `Uthman as yet collected the texts of the Qur'an.

“During the battle of Yamama, 450 reciters of the Quran were killed.” (The True Guidance, An Introduction To Quranic Studies, part 4 [Light of Life - P.O. BOX 13, A-9503 Villach, Austria], p. 47- citing Ibn Kathir’s Al-Bidaya wa al-Nibaya, chapter on Battle of Yamama).
Muhammad's child wife said this after Muhammad died:

"The verse of the stoning and of suckling an adult ten times were revealed, and they were (written) on a paper and kept under my bed. When the messenger of Allah expired and we were preoccupied with his death, a goat entered and ate away the paper."

As to the Taurat (Torah), Jewish scribes painstakingly copied it via a system of checking, double checking and adding each letter on each line. Any attempt to change something in the Torah would have resulted in immediate discovery and condemnation. And copies of the Torah from around the world agree exactly. Thousands of the Hebrew Old Testament manuscript copies are still available for textual criticism, ranging in age from the second century B.C. (Before Christ) to the eleventh century A.D. (After Christ).

The Qur'an is not an authentic book or revelation.

There are no Arabic chronicles of Islam from the first century of Islam. Many of the earliest documents known about Islam refer to the followers of Muhammad as "hagarenes," and the "tribe of Ishmael," in other words as descendants of Hagar, the servant girl that the Jewish patriarch Abraham used to father his son Ishmael.

This same quality of transmission we find regarding the Jewish and Christian bible cannot be said of the Islamic Qur'an. The Islamic Qur'an was mostly written down from 3rd and 4th hand accounts; and from a few thoughts written on scrap papers, palm leaves and stones --and compiled over 150 years after Muhammad died at the age of 63 in 632 A.D. In the Mishtatu ‘lMasabih, chapter 3, we are informed that by the command of the first Caliph, Abu Bakr, the text of the Qur’an was “collected” by Zaid ibn Thabit “from palm leaves and stones and from the breasts of those who had learned by heart” the various revelations." Abu Bakr’s copy came into the possession of Hafsah, one of Muhammad’s widows. Qustalani states that after Hafsah’s death her copy was torn to pieces by Mirwan, who was governor of Medina.

The oldest Qur'an dates from around 790 A.D. (after Jesus), and it is in the British Library. That's 158 years after Muhammad’s death.

Muslims often claim that the manuscript of the Qur'an housed in the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul, Turkey is one of the oldest sources. Muslims say it dates from around 650 A.D. There is an insurmountable problem with this. This document is written in Kufic (also known as al-Khatt al-Kufi) script. Coins in the British Museum show that the first coins using the Kufic script date from the mid to end of the 8th century (750-800 A.D.). The only script used during and after Muhammad's days was the Jazm script. These earliest copies of the Qur'an are written without vowels and diacritical dots that modern Arabic uses to make it clear what letter is intended. In the eighth and ninth centuries, more than a century after the death of Muhammad, Islamic commentators added diacritical marks to clear up the ambiguities of the text.

You want more proof that Quran too has many different versions then visit http://www.answering-islam.org/Green/seven.htm

As for Paul he was with Christ many times and had extensive knowledge of the savior.

You said "Verses which have in the past been the king-pin of Christian preaching such as the Trinity (1John 5:7), The Ascension (Mark 16:9-20 & Luke 24:51), The Prophecy of Jesus found in
(Isaiah 7:14) and the incident of the women caught in the act of adultery (John 8:1-11), have now been discovered to be fabricated and unauthentic, therefore one finds that in the Revised Standard Version '52 they have been thrown out as "interpolations" and "pious frauds" by these modern Christian scholars."

Please give me proof as how they are fabricated, by who and who threw them out.

I didn't except that the Quran was revealed, comparing Quran and the Bible is like comparing Apples and Oranges. Muslims compare Bible the same way they authenticate Quran by saying Bible is not the word of God but Quran is. Well why is it then Muhammad confirmed and recommended Gospel of Christ and the Torah if it's the not considered the word of God? Why is it that God has been able to preserve Quran in it's entirety but not Bible and the Torah which were the revelations came to mankind before? Why is the Old Testament and the Torah exactly the same, but different when compared to the Quran? Are they both wrong? If so then back to my first question why did Muhammad called them the "Guidance and Light" and used it himself?
http://bibleprobe.com/corruptedquran.htm

Your response "allah revealed quraan through arch angel gabriel.he was far superior than the robots and computers who have today, who will not do anything by himself but simply follow the commands of allah." makes no sense at all. My question was that how do you know for certain that it was Allah who sent these words? The words in the Quran were also written by men after Muhammad died so how do you know that they are the same words? Nothing missing or nothing added? Angel Gabriel has nothing to do with it. Who saw Angel Gabriel appearing to Muhammad and giving him the Quran?

Ajmal, you are always welcome to accept Christ and join his family anytime. But don't do it if someones gives you proof of Islam being false, rather join Christianity if you personally are touched by him and have accepted.

Not So Political said...

Ajmal you said "u said bible is the inspired word of god..don't play with words.bible is not the word of god.it was written by paul and many authors."

Well yes, Bible had many authors, everyone knows that but how come you forget that Quran too had many authors? God didn't write it himself did he? Nor did the Angel Gabriel wrote it down and sent it to Muhammad? And most importantly, neither did Muhammad write it (he couldn't) unlike other prophets before him he was illiterate. So then who wrote the Quran, if not the people?

You say we shouldn't trust Quran because it was written by men such as Paul, well so we shouldn't trust Quran also since that is how it also got created?

Not So Political said...

You say that Bible has been changed and so it cannot be trusted, well are you also aware that there were Post Uthman Quranic versions and Pre-Uthman quranic versions? The Pre-Uthman versions were thrown out and never used again, but they did existed, how do you know that they weren't the actual versions which you should be reading from today?

@ajmal rashid:

What you say is interesting, so I'll take it one point at a time.

I am an Israelite, and I'm reading from the original, unmodified Hebrew Scriptures.

"1. Who incited David to count the fighting men of Israel?

God did (2 Samuel 24: 1)
Satan did (I Chronicles 2 1:1)"

This is a case of something being lost or perverted through translation (one of the reasons the Muslims don't translate the Qur'an?).

The most literal translation I can provide is this:
Samuel A, 24:1
And the lord's wrath continued upon Israel; And he incited David in them to say "go count Israel and Judah."
Chronicles A, 21:1
And a hater stood upon Israel; And incited David to count Israel.

The Hebrew Scriptures talk about "Satan," but that word just means someone who hates. And hate means harming someone. So God hurt Israel, thus by the action of harming Israel he is referred to as a hater.

Even if there is an angel called Satan who's job is to harm people, he is working in the service of God, and thus his actions are attributed to God.

Yman said...

The conditions one must fulfill in order to be recognized as a true prophet are spelled out clearly in the Torah. I don't remember the exact place, so I'll have to list them from memory and that's not always as accurate as it should be, but anyway:
To be recognized as a true prophet you must make a prediction that comes true, and it must be something that would have been impossible for you to predict by natural means. Miracles might also be sufficient.

To be recognized as a false prophet, you must a prediction about something good that would happen that doesn't, or claim that the Torah has changed, as in subtracting, adding, or modifying commandments.

Most prophets actually seem to get their prophecy from an angel. Take Daniel for example.

And a prophecy isn't a prediction. A prophecy is the communication God sends to man.

So:
1 is questionable.
2, 6 are false.
3, 4 are worded inaccurately.
5 - Almost exactly right.
7 - probably false.

Not So Political said...

yman: actually, miracles proves nothing as they could be also be done by false prophets or anti-christ. 2 is false, as he/she is a true prophet not God. 6 I believe is not false but can be re-phrased to say that at some point they would have spoken to God. Other sources are also acceptable as long as they glorify God's word. 3 and 4 should be predictions rather than prophecies.

I am curious to know why you think 7 is false? If two prophets relaying God's message to people speak in opposites to each other then wouldn't that be a cause for concern?

Bible talks about true prophets and false prophets in a number of places but the one that comes to mind is Deuteronomy 18:21-22, "And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."

The true Prophet of the Lord predicts that which does come to pass. If the Prophet's predictions fail, they are exposed as NOT of God.

Yman said...

No one responded and I got tired of talking about this stuff, which is why I didn't continue writing. It's also the reason I didn't correct what I said about point 7 which is my mistake. What I mean to say is that it appears no 2 prophecies are identical, so you can identify a false prophet if he claims to have received an identical prophecy to someone else. Book of kings, where king Akh'av asks his 400 false prophets whether to got to war with Aram might support this.

I'm really bad with references, so thanks for providing one.

I'll see if there are other mysteries I can solve today from those 101 apparent contradictions. I can't solve #2 & #3, although #3 has a mistake in it: in the book of Samuel it says how many men there are in the tribe of Judah, and in Chronicles it says how many male warriors there are in the tribe of Judah.

Yman said...

Here are a few more a layman as myself can answer with ease:

"3. How many fighting men were found in Judah?

Five hundred thousand (2 Samuel 24:9)
Four hundred and seventy thousand (I Chronicles 21:5)"

In Samuel it's talking about the men of Judah, and the Chronicles are talking about the warriors in the tribe of Judah.

"7. How long did he rule over Jerusalem?

Three months (2 Kings 24:8)
Three months and ten days (2 Chronicles 36:9)"

Ever hear about rounding off?

"9. When did David bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem? Before defeating the Philistines or after?

After (2 Samuel 5 and 6)
Before (I Chronicles 13 and 14)"

Chronicles seems to also say that the Ark of the Covenant was brought to Jerusalem after the defeat of the Philistines.

---------------------------

I get the distinct impression that ajmal rashid just quoted blindly what others said, and that those others don't mind occasionally misquoting their sources, or that they use erroneous translations.

So far I've checked 10 of those points. 4 were wrong, and another 1 (point #10) may have had a valid point, but also included mistakes.

Quotes from the NIV and KJV Bible theologians admitting that the Bible is CORRUPT, and the books and gospels were written by MYSTERIOUS people in unknown dates and unknown places! Did the Prophets of GOD Almighty truly write the Bible? Ironically, the Bible talks about the details of Moses' death and burial in Moses' 5 books! Did Moses write about his own death and burial while he was dead?? Worse examples about Bible Corruption exist in the New Testament!

Here is a small Sample from the "gospel of" Mark, the OLDEST and supposedly the most original gospel in the New Testament:

"Serious doubts exists as to whether these verses belong to the Gospel of Mark. They are absent from important early manuscripts and display certain peculiarities of vocabulary, style and theological content that are unlike the rest of Mark. His Gospel probably ended at 16:8, or its original ending has been lost. (From the NIV Bible Foot Notes, page 1528)"

in the next few days i will insha allah reply to all your allegations and questions.

u may visit my blog ajmalrashid.blogspot.com for thorough details and pictures that i have collected from different sites.

The traditional view of the Mosaic authorship of the Torah came under sporadic criticism from medieval scholars including Isaac ibn Yashush, Abraham ibn Ezra, Bonfils of Damascus and bishop Tostatus of Avila, who pointed to passages such as the description of the death of Moses in Deuteronomy as evidence that some portions, at least, could not have been written by Moses.

In the 17th century Thomas Hobbes collected the current evidence and became the first scholar to conclude outright that Moses could not have written the bulk of the Torah. Shortly afterwards the philosopher Baruch Spinoza published a unified critical analysis, demonstrating that the problematic passages were not isolated cases that could be explained away one by one, but pervasive throughout the five books, concluding that it was "clearer than the sun at noon that the Pentateuch was not written by Moses…." Despite determined opposition from the Church, both Catholic and Protestant, the views of Hobbes and Spinoza gained increasing acceptance amongst scholars.

The documentary hypothesis is important in the field of biblical studies not only because it claims that the Torah was written by different people at different times—generally long after the events it describes—[36] but it also proposed what was at the time a radically new way of reading the Bible.

The critical analysis of authorship now encompasses every book of the Bible. Every book in turn has been hypothesized to bear traces of multiple authorship[citation needed], even the book of Obadiah[citation needed], which is only a single page. In some cases the traditional view on authorship has been overturned; in others, additional support, at least in part has been found

Archaeological evidence has so far failed to support Biblical accounts of Israelite bondage in Egypt, wandering in the desert, and conquest the Land of Israel in a military campaign, the accounts of the land being passed on to the 12 tribes of Israel, and David's and Solomon's conquests, and other key elements described in the Biblical narratives as occurring in the 10th century BC or before. This absence of evidence has led some notable archaeologists, such as Israel Finkelstein, Neil Silberman[41], and William Dever[42] to believe that these events never happened, and that the ancestors of the Hebrews and the Jews are either nomads who have become sedentary, or people from the plains of Canaan, who fled to the highlands to escape the control of the cities.

The Ketuvim, or "Writings" or "Scriptures," may have been written during or after the Babylonian Exile but no one can be sure. According to Rabbinic tradition, many of the psalms in the book of Psalms are attributed to David; King Solomon is believed to have written Song of Songs in his youth, Proverbs at the prime of his life, and Ecclesiastes at old age; and the prophet Jeremiah is thought to have written Lamentations.

The Masoretes also added vowel points (called niqqud) to the text, since the original text only contained consonant letters. This sometimes required the selection of an interpretation, since some words differ only in their vowels—their meaning can vary in accordance with the vowels chosen. In antiquity, variant Hebrew readings existed, some of which have survived in the Samaritan Pentateuch, the Dead Sea scrolls, and other ancient fragments, as well as being attested in ancient versions in other languages

When ancient scribes copied earlier books, they wrote notes on the margins of the page (marginal glosses) to correct their text—especially if a scribe accidentally omitted a word or line—and to comment about the text. When later scribes were copying the copy, they were sometimes uncertain if a note was intended to be included as part of the text. See textual criticism. Over time, different regions evolved different versions, each with its own assemblage of omissions and additions.

The autographs, the Greek manuscripts(A Biblical manuscript is any handwritten copy of a portion of the text of the Bible

) written by the original authors, have not survived. Scholars surmise the original Greek text from the versions that do survive

In 331, the Emperor Constantine commissioned Eusebius to deliver fifty Bibles for the Church of Constantinople. Athanasius (Apol. Const. 4) recorded Alexandrian scribes around 340 preparing Bibles for Constans. Little else is known, though there is plenty of speculation. For example, it is speculated that this may have provided motivation for canon lists, and that Codex Vaticanus, Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Alexandrinus are examples of these Bibles

The earliest surviving complete manuscript of the entire Bible is the Codex Amiatinus, a Latin Vulgate edition produced in eighth century England at the double monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow.

The earliest printed edition of the Greek New Testament appeared in 1516 from the Froben press

The first printed edition with critical apparatus (noting variant readings among the manuscripts) was produced by the printer Robert Estienne of Paris in 1550. The Greek text of this edition and of those of Erasmus became known as the Textus Receptus (Latin for "received text"),

The discovery of older manuscripts, which belong to the Alexandrian text-type, including the 4th century Codex Vaticanus and Codex Sinaiticus, led scholars to revise their view about the original Greek text. Attempts to reconstruct the original text are called critical editions. Karl Lachmann based his critical edition of 1831 on manuscripts dating from the 4th century and earlier, to demonstrate that the Textus Receptus must be corrected according to these earlier texts.

Their apparatus includes the result of votes among scholars, ranging from certain {A} to doubtful {E}, on which variants best preserve the original Greek text of the New Testament.

Original New International Version

Today's New International Version

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

The texts are of great religious and historical significance, as they include practically the only known surviving copies of Biblical documents made before 100 CE, and preserve evidence of considerable diversity of belief and practice within late Second Temple Judaism.

The Qur’an[1] (Arabic: القرآن ‎ al-qur’ān, literally "the recitation"; also sometimes transliterated as Qur’ān, Koran, Alcoran or Al-Qur’ān) is the central religious text of Islam. Muslims believe the Qur’an to be the book of divine guidance and direction for mankind, and consider the original Arabic text to be the final revelation of God.[2][3][4][5] Islam holds that the Qur’an was revealed to Muhammad by the angel Jibrīl (Gabriel) over a period of 23 years.[2][6][7] Muslims regard the Qur’an as the culmination of a series of divine messages that started with those revealed to Adam, regarded in Islam as the first prophet, and continued with the Suhuf-i-Ibrahim (Scrolls of Abraham),[8] the Tawrat (Torah),[9][10] the Zabur (Psalms),[11][12] and the Injeel (Gospel).[13][14][15] The aforementioned books are not explicitly included in the Qur’an, but are recognized therein.[16][17] The Qur’an also refers[18] to many events from Jewish and Christian scriptures, some of which are retold in comparatively distinctive ways from the Bible and the Torah, while obliquely referring to other events described explicitly in those texts.

The Qur'an itself expresses that it is the book of guidance. Therefore it rarely offers detailed accounts of historical events; the text instead typically placing emphasis on the moral significance of an event rather than its narrative sequence.[19] It does not describe natural facts in a scientific manner but teaches that natural and supernatural events are signs of God.[20]

The Qur’an was written down by Muhammad's companions while he was alive, although the prime method of transmission was oral. It was compiled in the time of Abu Bakr, the first caliph, and was standardized in the time of Uthman, the third caliph. The Qur’an in its actual form is generally considered by academic scholars to record the words spoken by Muhammad because the search for variants in Western academia has not yielded any differences of great significance and that historically controversy over the content of the Qur’an has never become a main point. [21][22] Therefore all Muslims, Sunni or Shia use the same Qur’an.

The ayat are unlike the highly refined poetry of the pre-Islamic Arabs in their content and distinctive rhymes and rhythms, being more akin to the prophetic utterances marked by inspired discontinuities found in the sacred scriptures of Judaism and Christianity. The actual number of ayat has been a controversial issue among Muslim scholars since Islam's inception, some recognizing 6,000, some 6,204, some 6,219, and some 6,236, although the words in all cases are the same. The most popular edition of the Qur’an, which is based on the Kufa school tradition, contains 6,236 ayat.[2]

The Qur’anic text seems to have no beginning, middle, or end, its nonlinear structure being akin to a web or net.[2] Critics have commented on the textual arrangement pointing out lack of continuity, absence of any chronological or thematic order, and presence of repetition.[32][33]

Michael Sells, citing the work of the critic Norman O. Brown, acknowledges Brown's observation that the seeming "disorganization" of Qur’anic literary expression — its "scattered or fragmented mode of composition," in Sells's phrase — is in fact a literary device capable of delivering "profound effects — as if the intensity of the prophetic message were shattering the vehicle of human language in which it was being communicated."[36][37] Sells also addresses the much-discussed "repetitiveness" of the Qur’an, seeing this, too, as a literary device.

As the Qur'an says, "With the truth we (God) have sent it down and with the truth it has come down." It designates positive religion, the letter of the revelation dictated by the angel to the prophet. It means to cause this revelation to descend from the higher world. According to hadith, the verses were sent down in special circumstances known as asbab al-nuzul. However, in this view God himself is never the subject of coming down.[40]

The Qur'an frequently asserts in its text that it is divinely ordained, an assertion that Muslims believe. The Qur'an — often referring to its own textual nature and reflecting constantly on its divine origin — is the most meta-textual, self-referential religious text amongst all religious texts. The Qur'an refers to a written pre-text which records God's speech even before it was sent down

And if ye are in doubt as to what We have revealed from time to time to Our servant, then produce a Sura like thereunto; and call your witnesses or helpers (If there are any) besides God, if your (doubts) are true. But if ye cannot — and of a surety ye cannot — then fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones, which is prepared for those who reject Faith. ”
—Qur'an 2:23–

The Qur’an in its present form is generally considered by academic scholars to record the words spoken by Muhammad because the search for variants in Western academia has not yielded any differences of great significance and that historically controversy over the content of the Qur’an has never become a main point. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you."

@Ajmal:
I'm not trying to fool anyone. I simply checked the first 10 of those 101 so called contradictions. Of those 10, I was easily able to see that 4 "contradictions" were not contradictions at all, 5 apparently are, and 1 also seems to be a contradiction but whoever you quoted made a mistake about it. That's what I said, yet you try to twist it as if I'm saying that I've answered all of it.

I'm also saying that whoever you're quoting is unreliable if 50% of what he says is simply and verifiably false.

As to stuff you quote from the Christian Scriptures, that has nothing to do with me. I'm an Israeli, and I don't believe in that stuff.

You seem to think that if the Hebrew Scriptures are wrong, that somehow means the Qur'an is right. It doesn't. If you want me to believe that the Qur'an is true you need to prove the following:
1. The Hebrew Scriptures are corrupted.
2. That Makhammad is a true prophet.
Even if we assume you proved point #1, how will you prove point #2? If you don't prove point #2, then all you'll be doing is turning believers into atheists.

Ajmal, in addition to Yman's point, I find a quite apparent and glaring problem with your research. It's all based on Wikipedia!, well, hopefully you are aware that everyone online has the rights and the ability to change it's text. Please, if you are going to quote texts from websites, ensure that they are authentic.

Many Muslims try to capitalize in their debates on the fact that there are variant readings of Biblical text in the many manuscripts we have of it. This is natural for handcopied texts and nothing else can be expected. Just try yourself to copy down by hand twenty pages of any book, then let a friend proofread it and see how many mistakes he finds. It is humanly nearly impossible to copy by hand without any error. In a certain sense Muslims have the "advantage" that Christians have carefully documented these variants in scholarly journals and monographs. Christian and secular scholars are openly discussing these problems in the discipline of textual criticism.

On the other hand, Muslim have the well known propaganda statement that there are no variants in the Qur'an at all and the Qur'an has been the same text even to the detail of each single letter and that this was so from the very beginning. More educated Muslims know that this is not true, but the average Muslim is made to believe this objectively wrong claim.

In particular, let us ask why some of the oldest manuscripts are not photographically reproduced and made available to the public and the scholars. Why not start with the Topkapi manuscript in Istanbul, the Taschkent manuscript, and the two old manuscripts in Cairo and Damascus. They are not Uthmanic manuscripts as some believe, but they are quite old. And then, publish them together in a format that makes it easy to compare them, or even better, listing all the differences between the texts, like it is done for the critical editions of the Bible text.

Until Muslim scholarship will become serious and honest about a critical investigation of the old Qur'anic manuscripts, we are mainly left with guessing, apart from a few documented facts some of which are collected here under the title Variant Readings of the Qur'an. But making access to the Qur'an manuscripts difficult is not inspiring much confidence in the claims of textual preservation of the Qur'an.

Let me reiterate this: In the Hebrew Scripture the only difference between edition is some spelling mistakes here and there.

There was a sect that had a different version of the texts, if I remember correctly. They came to existence in the late 2nd temple era, I think, and they were never mainstream or popular. Apparently they lived in a small secluded community in the caves of the Judean mountains or something like that. I don't really know much about it. In any case, it happened at a time that was prone for new sect. Others were the Tzadokis (I don't know the English spelling) and Christians.

Aside from them, I know of no one using an invalid version, especially not prior to the Macabis.

The Christians translate their and our scriptures to all languages, and create new translations from old ones. Is it a wonder things change? But the Israelis preserve the Hebrew Scriptures in the original languages they were written in (Hebrew and Aramaic) and study them in those languages. We also preserve the correct way of reading it, so we know what the text is supposed to be even where there are spelling mistakes.

Not So Political said...

Yman is correct in his assessment. And let me go further to say that "different translations does not mean corruption." Which is what most Muslims are led to believe.

No matter what the textual variants are, the most fundamental message of the Bible does not change, which is the same from the time of it's original inception. You can't say that what Bible taught 2000 years ago is different from it teaches today.

Yman said...

@Ajmal:
From chcking out the first 10 points of those 101 contradictions, it seems you are pointing out where the prophets contradict each other, rather than showing different versions of the same text.

@Not So Political:
Ever heard the term "lost in translation"? Well, it's true. Stuff does get lost in translation, and I've seen the difference between the original and the translation myself. Translations are useful for getting the general message across, but what about the fine details?

The day the 1st translation of the Torah (Pentateuch) was created is for us a day of mourning.

Not So Political said...

Yman: I have heard the term. But like I mentioned before that the different translations does not necessarily mean corruption of the bible. In fact all it proves that we as human beings are imperfect. Translations were done to make the gospel reachable to everyone. It's defintly nothing to mourn about but rather to ge glad for. As for the "stuff getting lost in translation" can you please elaborate as to what was lost?

My response:-Was this scroll of Isaiah present day bible? The new testament?

You said :- The Dead Sea scroll of Isaiah verified almost exactly the Isaiah scroll copied in the 9th century;

You said:- The same Bible Muhammad would have seen (if he ever did) is in both (1) The Vatican (Codex Vaticanus) and (2) British Museum (Codex Sinaticus). It is all there, including Jesus dying on the cross as atonement for our sins. And, His resurrection, and ascension into heaven - in front of many witnesses.

My response:- Again a lie. It is not there. No resurrection. No ascension, no begotten son. Why do you lie? Don’t you have least bit of dignity. I gave you reference of BBC. You can read that link.Your scholars say I am copying verbatim from site

“Had this remained in subsequent versions, "the suffering of Jews in the subsequent centuries would, if possible, have been even worse", says the distinguished New Testament scholar Professor Bart Ehrman And although many of the other alterations and differences are minor, these may take some explaining for those who believe every word comes from God.
Faced with differing texts, which is the truly authentic one?
Mr Ehrman was a born again Bible-believing Evangelical until he read the original Greek texts and noticed some discrepancies.
THE BIBLE WE NOW USE CAN'T BE THE INERRANT WORD OF GOD, he says, since what we have are the sometimes mistaken words copied by fallible scribes.
"When people ask me if the Bible is the word of God I answer 'which Bible?'"
THE CODEX - AND OTHER EARLY MANUSCRIPTS - OMIT SOME MENTIONS OF ASCENSION OF JESUS INTO HEAVEN, AND KEY REFERENCES TO THE RESURRECTION, WHICH THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY HAS SAID IS ESSENTIAL FOR CHRISTIAN BELIEF.
OTHER DIFFERENCES CONCERN HOW JESUS BEHAVED. In one passage of the Codex, Jesus is said to be "angry" as he healed a leper, whereas the modern text records him as healing with "compassion".
ALSO MISSING IS THE STORY OF THE WOMAN TAKEN IN ADULTERY and about to be stoned - until Jesus rebuked the Pharisees (a Jewish sect), inviting anyone without sin to cast the first stone.
NOR ARE THERE WORDS OF FORGIVENESS FROM THE CROSS. JESUS DOES NOT SAY "FATHER FORGIVE THEM FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO".
Fundamentalists, who believe every word in the Bible is true, may find these differences unsettling.
But the picture is complicated. Some argue that another early Bible, the Codex Vaticanus, is in fact older. And there are other earlier texts of almost all the books in the bible, though none pulled together into a single volume.
Many Christians have long accepted that, while the Bible is the authoritative word of God, it is not inerrant. Human hands always make mistakes.
"It should be regarded as a living text, something CONSTANTLY CHANGING AS GENERATION AND GENERATION tries to understand the mind of God," says David Parker, a Christian working on digitising the Codex.
